Getting your first tattoo is a big (and exciting) decision, but we know it can also feel a little intimidating if you’re not sure what to expect. Whether you've been planning your design for years or just recently decided to take the plunge, this guide will walk you through the full experience — from arrival at the studio to walking out with your brand-new ink.
At Sacred Gold Tattoo Studio, based in Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross, we’re here to make your first tattoo as smooth, safe, and memorable as possible.
What Happens When You Arrive at Sacred Gold
When you arrive at Sacred Gold, you'll be welcomed by our friendly front-of-house team. First things first, we’ll ask you to complete a consent form. This covers basic health info, tattoo disclaimers, and age verification (you must be 18+). It's a standard part of the process and helps ensure your comfort and safety throughout the session.
Design Chat & Final Prep
Your artist will take time to go over your design, placement, and any last-minute tweaks. This is your opportunity to ask questions, suggest changes, or confirm sizing and placement. We pride ourselves on custom tattoos, and our artists are always happy to adapt the design to suit your vision and body.
Stencil Application
Once the final design is ready, your artist will print and apply a stencil to your skin so you can see the positioning. You’ll have a chance to check the size and placement in the mirror before anything permanent begins.
If something feels off, speak up! This is a collaborative process, and we want you to feel completely happy before moving forward.
Time to Tattoo
With the stencil in place, your artist will prep their station and get started. All of our equipment is single-use and sterile, and our artists follow the highest hygiene standards.
During the tattoo, you’ll feel mild to moderate discomfort (similar to a cat scratch or sunburn), but most people find it manageable, especially for small to medium pieces.
We’ll always make sure you're comfortable, offering breaks if needed and checking in with you throughout the session.
Photos (Optional)
Once your tattoo is complete, your artist may ask to take a few photos of the finished piece (with your permission). These are used for their portfolio and Sacred Gold’s social media channels, but it’s entirely optional. If you’d rather not have your photo taken, just let us know. No pressure at all.
Aftercare Advice
Once the tattoo is done, your artist will clean the area and apply a protective wrap or film. They’ll also walk you through tattoo aftercare, which typically includes:

Keeping the wrap on for several hours

Gently washing the tattoo with unscented soap

Applying a thin layer of aftercare ointment or cream

Avoiding soaking (baths, pools) and direct sun exposure
We’ll give you full aftercare instructions before you leave — and we’re always available if you have questions during healing.
